Choose a thicker fabric if your event is being held during winter months. Lighter fabrics should be chosen for those events held during the warmer months. Determine the best dress length. Most special occasion dress lengths start at mid-knee. Shorter dresses can be worn for less formal or small events. Mid-calf length dresses are appropriate for afternoon weddings. Longer dresses are a great choice for more formal events such as evening weddings or upscale dinner parties.
Necklines and sleeve length should also be taken into account. If you have well-toned arms and shoulders you can pull off wearing a dress with shorter sleeves. If you are a bit on the heavier side, you may want to wear longer sleeves.
